RESPECT

R-E-S-P-E-C-T. Did you know Aretha Franklin's version is a cover song?

Aretha Franklin’s rendition of “Respect” is one of the most iconic songs in American music history. The song was originally written and recorded by Otis Redding in 1965 but it was Franklin’s version that became a hit in 1967 and is still considered the classic take on the song today.

Many people are unaware that the song was originally written and recorded by Otis Redding. Redding’s version of “Respect” was more bluesy and soulful than Franklin’s and while it was well-received by critics it did not achieve the same level of commercial success as Franklin’s version.

Other artists who have recorded versions of “Respect” include Diana Ross, who recorded a slower, more soulful version of the song in 1970 and Kelly Clarkson, who recorded a rock-infused cover in 2007. However, none of these versions have achieved the same level of success or cultural significance as Franklin’s version.
